This work, which owes its origin to a suggestion made by Dr. Wallis Budge, represents an endeavor on the part of the author to provide a brief account of the civilizations of ancient Babylonia and Assyria in light of the new material.
In addition to the chapters devoted to the cultural evolution of Mesopotamian dwellers, two chapters are devoted to the consideration of Cuneiform writing — its pictorial origin, the history of its decipherment, and the literature for which it is the vehicle.
